Chapter 2.20 FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM
2.20.050 Colleton County fire-rescue commission--Established.
There is created and established the Colleton County
fire-rescue commission (the "fire-rescue commission") as an operating agency of
county government through which fire protection and rescue services in the new
district shall be coordinated under the provisions of this chapter and pursuant
the Section 4-9-30(5)(b) of the Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976, as
amended. The fire and rescue commission shall be composed of five members
nominated by the fire and control board and appointed by county council. The
fire and control board shall provide the names of nine individuals to the county
council for consideration. A commission member shall not be an officer or
director of any rural department; provided, that in the event an individual is
placed in nomination, he/she may retain his/her chief and board status until
such time of appointment by council at which time he/she must resign his/her
position. The members shall serve terms of four years, except that two of the
commissioners appointed hereunder shall serve terms of two years each, said
commissioners to be determined by drawing lots. The fire-rescue commission shall
established a set of bylaws to govern its business. The bylaws shall be approved
by county council. The fire-rescue commission shall annually elect a chairman,
vice chairman and secretary, and shall adopt bylaws, not inconsistent with this
chapter to govern the conduct of its business. The fire-rescue commission shall
meet not less than four times each year and at other times as called by the
chairman or upon the written request by majority of the members. Such meetings,
as well as its other business shall be subject to the S.C. Freedom of
Information Act and any amendment thereto. The council may remove any member of
the fire-rescue commission by a majority vote of the members of council present
and voting, with consultation of the fire control board. (Ord. 93-O-17 §
