Chapter 11.12 ROAD NAMING AND ADDRESSING GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES
11.12.040 General.
A. The term "road" is used throughout this chapter and
includes all streets, highways and other travel ways which require
naming.
B. All roads within the boundaries of Colleton County,
maintained by Colleton County, the state of South Carolina or a municipality
will be named. Private access roads will be named only if they provide access to
two or more individual structures which require separate addresses or if the
structures are a substantial distance from a named road.
1. Unincorporated areas of Colleton County will have roads
named and addressed in accordance with this chapter.
2. Incorporated areas of Colleton County will have roads
named and addressed in accordance with resolutions of support adopted by the
incorporated areas. To avoid duplications, the municipality should have all new
road names or road name changes approved through the 9-1-1 department, prior to
the official adoption of the number change.
C. The 9-1-1 department shall maintain a uniform system for
naming roads and a current database to prevent duplication.
D. The 9-1-1 department shall have the responsibility for
approving all road names and road name changes based on strict adherence to this
chapter.
E. Colleton County council reserves final authority and will
provide for final resolution of disputes related to road naming and addressing
in the unincorporated areas of Colleton County, that cannot be settled through
the appeals 9-1-1 department. Decisions will be based on strict adherence to
these guidelines. Any deviations from the chapter will require a
