Title 11 ROADS, BRIDGES AND PUBLIC PLACES
Chapter 11.12 ROAD NAMING AND ADDRESSING GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES
11.12.080 Developments.
A. The Colleton County planning commission shall maintain a
uniform system for naming developments and coordinate their efforts with the
9-1-1 department to maintain a current database to prevent
duplication.
B. Development Names. No duplication of existing development
names will be permitted--either exact spelling, phonetically, homonymic or names
which duplicate existing road names.
1. New or planned developments will be named through the
submission of a plan by the developer to the Colleton County planning
commission. This plan shall show the proposed development name. Several
alternate names should be submitted in the event a name is duplicated. In order
to avoid duplication of names, all plans shall be submitted by the planning
commission to the 9-1-1 department within forty-eight (48) working hours for
review and cross checking against the current 9-1-1 database. The 9-1-1
department shall reply to the planning commission within forty-eight (48)
working hours with the results of the review.
To prevent delays, developers are encouraged to contact the
9-1-1 department in reference to development names prior to submitting plans to
the planning commission.
2. New development names will not be allowed if they
duplicate existing county or municipal development names or existing road name
located within Colleton County boundaries. This includes duplications of words,
phonetics or homonyms.
C. Development names should be kept as simple and logical as
possible to foster clarity and efficiency. Use of frivolous or complicated words
or unconventional spellings should be avoided. In all cases, names which might
be perceived to be offensive, will not be allowed.
D. The planning commission reserves the right to reject any
and all names submitted and/or request an alternate name for new
developments.
E. Collective Developments. Mobile home parks, office
complexes and apartment complexes can be assigned addresses using one of the
following two methods. The most appropriate method will be determined by the
9-1-1 department.
1. Preferred. Internal streets may be named and then
buildings addressed in the same method as other roads.
2. Alternate. An overall address can be assigned for each
point of ingress or egress to the development. Individual lots or units can then
be differentiated by lot or unit numbers in addition to the overall complex
address.
For example:
1001 Sniders Hwy. Apt B-7;
1250 Keegan Road Lot 10
The overall complex address must be posted so that is visible
at both the point of ingress and egress. The lot or building number(s) must be
posted so that it is visible at the front of each lot or unit. Both the complex
address and the lot/unit address must be posted in accordance with all other
applicable sections of this chapter.
The size of address numbers for apartment buildings shall
follow the guidelines for businesses, while mobile homes shall follow the
guidelines for residential structures. (See Article II, Section 2.3 of Ordinance
94-O-21.) (Ord. 99-O-30 §§ 8.0--8.4, 1999)
