The Auditor’s office can assist you with:

• Personal property
  The Auditor’s office prepares all motor vehicle tax notices, any changes to these notices, including high mileage reduction, address changes, etc.
  
  Taxpayers may return license plates to the Auditor’s office for a pro-rated refund if the vehicle has been sold.
• Taxation questions
• Tax exemptions
  The Auditor’s office assists citizens with forms for those who may qualify for tax exemption through the state of South Carolina. Some of these include but are not limited to:
• Certain military veterans
• Medal of Honor recipients
• Wheelchair-confined citizens
• Prisoners of war
• Vehicles used in the transportation of citizens requiring wheelchairs
• Homestead Exemption Act

The Colleton County Auditor is the statutory officer charged with preparing a complete listing and description of all taxable real and personal property in his/her county, political subdivisions and special purpose districts; by owner; type of property; levy; location and assessed value. The auditor calculates levies; recommends or applies certain mandated levies to all assessed values; makes appropriate changes to the tax duplicate; values and assesses certain classes of personal property; and provides the schedules of assessed values and their descriptions with the resulting levies and taxes to the county official charged with the collection of taxes.

The specific duties and powers of the Auditor are spelled out in Title 12, Chapter 39 of the Code of Laws. Most of the duties of the auditor are regulated by the State Department of Revenue, although some of the auditor’s activities fall under the regulation of the Comptroller General.
