The County's new 2020 COMPREHENSIVE PLAN was adopted by County Council on June 2, 2009.  Copies are available at the Public Library at 600 Hampton Street and at Planning & Development Offices. 

Also, the Planning Commission is currently working on revising the County land development regulations (zoning and subdvison regulations).  An ad hoc subcommittee of the Planning Commission meets twice a month to rewrite these regulations.  The meetings are open to the public.  If you wish to attend, email or call Philip Slayter for more information.   

The Planning and Development Department is responsible for planning, permitting and code enforcement activities in the unincorporated portions of the County.  The Office carries out these responsibilities through five major departmental functions:

Building Codes Administration 
     Issues permits for all construction activity and placement of mobile homes.

Floodplain Management
     Regulates construction and mobile homes in flood hazard areas.

Land Use Planning
     Conducts long-range planning, land subdivision review and platting.
 
Zoning Administration
     Issues permits, reviews site plans and enforces the zoning ordinance.

Public Nuisances
     Enforces the controls on abandoned or dilapidated structures, junk vehicles and overgrown lots.
