Colleton County (population 39,000) is seeking an experienced Deputy Administrator. Located in the heart of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, Colleton County offers an appealing rural lifestyle within an hour’s drive to Charleston, Hilton Head Island, and Savannah, Georgia. Colleton County is on the cusp of a period of transformative growth. With major residential and industrial developments on the horizon, Colleton County is seeking an experienced Deputy Administrator who can assist in navigating this expansion, attracting new economic opportunities, and fostering sustainable development while preserving Colleton County’s unique character and charm.

Under limited supervision, performs a variety of functions, including working under general supervision of the County Administrator in the overall management and administration of County services and functions; assisting the County Administrator in strategic and organizational planning, in resource  and fiscal planning, and in implementation of County policies and programs approved by the County Administrator and County Council; fostering a supportive, collaborative and inclusive work environment using modern management techniques to improve efficiency and effectiveness of County services; exhibiting an energetic, citizen-focused, and solution-oriented approach in service as a member of the County’s dynamic and professional leadership team; assisting the County Administrator in planning, organizing and supervising the activities of a high performing staff engaged in the complex work of implementing county policies that affect the quality of life of County residents; exhibiting effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams; exhibiting a proven ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with department heads, elected officials, and with other governmental entities and regulatory agencies; acting on behalf of the County Administrator as directed and during absences employee must meet the minimum requirements, conditions of employment and be able to perform successfully all duties and responsibilities.  The position may require irregular hours and may also require on-call work during emergencies.  This position may require irregular travel.

Performs other duties as required.

Requires a bachelor’s degree in business administration, public policy, public administration or related degree. A master’s degree is preferred.  Three to five years of progressively responsible full-time administrative and governmental management experience required. Experience as a County or City Administrator/Manager preferred.  Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.  Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
